The Points Guy Travel Tuesday Top 10: Airline Uniforms

To contact us Click HERE

For this week's Travel Tuesday Top 10 on The Points Guy, we decided to tackle a fun topic and discuss some of the more fashionable airline employee uniforms out there.

Too often flight attendants and pilots are stuck in dowdy duds that have nothing to do with the glamor airline travel use to exude back in the glory days. But lately several airlines have employed big-name designers to redo their uniforms and restore some cache to the skies.

Check out some of our favorite looks in the story at this link: http://thepointsguy.com/2012/08/travel-tuesday-top-10-fashion-forward-flight-attendant-uniforms/

This was an interesting Travel Tuesday Top 10 for The Points Guy. Basically we researched all the upcoming hotel openings around the world, and pinpointed some of the most interesting where people will be able to both earn and redeem points - chains like Starwood, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, etc.

As you'll see when you read it, there are some fabulous properties set to open in 2012 and 2013, and I'm personally excited about visiting several of them by using points I've been earning with my other travels.

Have a look at the ones we cover from Maui to Miami, Berlin and Vienna to Bangkok and Cusco. Wherever you're going, there's bound to be some great hotels coming soon!

The Points Guy Top 10: Ways to Fly the A380

To contact us Click HERE
We've started doing a Travel Tuesday Top 10 on The Points Guy and this week's was a fun one on which airlines are flying the superjumbo A380 and how you can experience each of them for yourself either by finding cheap flights on off-label routes like Emirates' Sydney-Auckland flights, or using miles you may have accrued on a partner like United for Lufthansa or Delta miles on Korean Air to travel in style on one of the long-hauls these planes were designed for.

Take a look at whole list plus info on their routes and which other airlines have orders of these giant birds coming in at the following link: http://thepointsguy.com/2012/09/travel-tuesday-top-10-ways-you-can-fly-the-a380/

LA Confidential Magazine: Sycamore Kitchen

The folks behind one of my favorite LA restaurants, Hatfield's, have opened a casual new breakfast and lunch place on La Brea called Sycamore Kitchen, and the only thing better than the open-faced sandwiches and fresh salads is the delicious array of pastries that pair nicely with the fresh-brewed Stumptown Coffee on tap.

All in all, a great place for a brunch date - especially on the sunny front patio if it's not too hot out.

Frontiers: Laurel Hardware

To contact us Click HERE

One of the most exciting new openings around town lately was Laurel Hardware, a little restaurant right around the corner from me that makes its home in...a former hardware store. These days, the place is looking gorgeous with a sleek and always-crowded back bar, a delightfully tranquil olive tree-shaded back patio, and a bustling front room that looks in on the open kitchen.

The food is all seasonal and fresh, and the menu is constantly changing, so there are always surprises, you won't ever get bored of the selection.

They do have a few kinks to work out (like proper ventilation when they fire up that pizza oven), but for a very nice dining experience and a great date place, try it for your next dinner out.

LA Confidential Magazine: LA Wine Bars

My latest Imbibe roundup for LA Confidential - in the September issue - was a shortlist of my favorite wine bars around town including old favorites like Bar Covell, BottleRock and Barbrix on the eastside, as well as newcomers like Dry Tour in Venice as well as ones that are both old and new, like the new location of Venokado in Santa Monica, where you can buy wine and gifts as well as enjoying a drink (or a flight of drinks) there.

Check out the full list and call up some friends to come with you and uncork a bottle of the good stuff at one of these great places: http://la-confidential-magazine.com/dining/articles/wine-bars-los-angeles

Stacked Enchiladas - Ojai, CA

To contact us Click HERE
I wanted to make enchiladas all day. I started a gringo style cooking preperation: Grilled, then shredded chicken, caramelized onions, warmed up enchilada sauce from a can, and shredded Monterey jack cheese, corn tortillas ready. Then came the assembly... I just could not get them to stay rolled, the tortilla from ripping, it was just all bad. So I stacked them all it layers. Sauce on the bottom of the glass pan, a tortilla, chicken, onions,  sauce, cheese, tortilla, sauce, chicken, onions, cheese... Repeat until done. 10 minutes or so in the oven until bubbly, and then a quick blast under the broiler for a nice golden brown.
Was this not the easiest thing ever? It was so delicious and worth every bite!

O.M.G. again - Ojai, CA

To contact us Click HERE
Osteria Monte Grappa is not new to Ojai but it has moved to a new location. It is now in the arcade so it is more accessible to tourists cruising the main drag. I love the old building with hard wood floors and white washed walls. Very pretty.
Kat and I ordered a glass of prosecco to congratulate ourselves for making it through the Zumba class at the Ojai Valley Atheltic Club. Go us!
Let us start out with the best part of this meal... the salads - Kat ordered the Inslata Estiva with butter lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, red onion, cucumber and feta cheese. She loved every bite!
I, of course, ordered the burrata with avocado, basil and tomatoes. Simple yet so satisfying, they forgot the balsamic but I didn't seem to mind. I didn't even notice until I was done with my plate.
NOW THIS IS WHEN THINGS GO DOWN HILL...
Kat ordered this. What the heck is it? Well, It is described as this:
Fettuccine All’Ojaiana -Fettuccine pasta, Tossed lightly in spiced olive oil, garlic, local green beans, tomatoes, eggplant topped with fresh mozzarella and basil served over an avocado sauce.
Basically it was noodles served over guacamole. There were far too many ingredients on the plate not to have any flavor, it was all a little one note.
Now this is mine. The photo pretty much summed up what it tasted like unfortunately. I ordered the Risotto Special and was not impressed. The arborio rice was tossed with roasted duck, assorted mushrooms, dandelion greens and drizzled with truffle oil. What it tasted like was dry wild rice, with the surprise bite of either gamey duck or woody mushroom. It lacked the care and love a risotto should be presented with.
I hate going to a restaurant that you really want to love but leaving with a sour taste and a smaller check book. It really is the worst thing. Maybe we ordered the wrong entrees but these were the "specials" that they were offering. I have heard you usually can never go wrong if you take their suggestions! Oh well, that is how it goes sometimes. Another chance for O.M.G. is probably in the near future.

Peddling - Ojai to Ventura...

To contact us Click HERE
I have been wanting to ride my bike from Ojai to Ventura. It is about 15 miles and I know my body could use it. So Scott dropped me off in downtown Ojai and I hopped on the bike trail that makes it's way to the beach in Ventura. He was going surfing and I was all set to meet him there after I peddled my way down.
The ride was beyond gorgeous. I couldn't help but feel blessed to live in such beautiful country.
What an outstanding bridge for just a bike trail!
Not only was the ride breath taking, the art along the way was quite entertaing. How about this windmill creation?
Wahoo! I made it... Beautiful day on the water.
This is the kind of exercise that makes me want to be active. Every. Single. Day.
I am inspired to keep moving so I am off paddle boarding with my friend tomorrow in the Ventura Keys. Pictures to follow. Keep moving!

La Valle - Ojai, CA

To contact us Click HERE
New restaurant in Ojai alert! La Valle just replaced the Garden Terrace across the street from the Soule Park Golf Course. The story we received is the owner has been a chef at many restaurants in Santa barbara and finally achieved his dream and opened his own place. The menu is full of Italian and mexican favorites. It seems unlikely these cuisines together but it is all good to me.
Scott with the Mexican side of the menu and had the Shrimp Empenadas. Light and crispy tortillas filled with sauteed shrimp, garlic, shallots, tomatoes and cilantro burst with flavor. Guacamole and sour cream are drizzled on top. Ask for extra green salsa and dip each bite into the tomatillo goodness.
I copied Scott and ordered Mexican too. Next time we go back I promise to re-review and order Italian, it is like two restaurants in one! I ordered the Trio Tacos of two types of pork and the other goat. What the heck? Goat?! Yes, I actually tried it. It was not bad, it fact kind of good. I just felt a little sad eating it. I had tons of food on my plate, the rice and beans were extremely satisfying
The restaurant is a little far off the beaten path if you are doing the walking tour of Ojai. Be sure to travel all the way down to the East end so you will not miss any other hidden gems in the area!

Cafe Firenze - Moorpark, CA

To contact us Click HERE
I watch Bravo TV, a lot. So I am a super fan of all things Top Chef, Housewives and pretty much whatever is on any given day. I have a few favorite chefs and Fabio is one of them. I like that he is an outstanding chef, is suave with the ladies and has really great hair. So when I found out he had a restaurant in Moorpark, only about 30 minutes from my house, I just knew I had to visit it. Scott surprised me with a last minute trip to the valley so away we went...
Complimentary bread to the table. It was delicious, I tried not to fill up on it.
Scott ordered the Crispy Duck Salad to start. It was full of roasted mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, shaved parmesan and pine nuts. It was dressed beautifully and just a really fantastic start to the meal.
When I saw the Burrata and Pancetta Crostino on the starter menu I knew I just had to have it. Imported Burrata, crispy pancetta, fried sage, browned butter, balsamic all on a grilled slice of bread. OMG. This was probably my favorite thing of 2012. I am not kidding at all. This was just so my favorite flavors of everything. I could have ordered a second order for my entree. If you go here, please try this in honor of Melissa Good Taste. You will not be disappointed.
Scott had the special pasta of the evening. I was basking the flavors of my starter so I missed the description and the name. Scott loved no matter, and he ate every last bite. The pasta was fresh and the sauce rich, very comforting!
I ordered the Tortellacci de Zucca, or for non-Italian speakers, Butternut Squash Ravioli. The filling reminded me of Fall and was cut with a creamy ricotta. The sauce was a brown butter sage cream sauce, also known as heaven on Earth.
Well, well, well... Look who we have here: Mr. Fabio himself. He asked to have his picture taken with "The Melissa Good Taste"- He really is a cool guy, great chef and has a wonderful restaurant.
You can catch him on Bravo TV, his current show is on now: Life After Top Chef.
Just one more thing. Shout out to my husband for such a fun date night. Outstanding food, great atmosphere, lovely wine and a great dessert that we picked up through the Froster's Freeze drive-thru. Have you had a Twister lately? They are amazing!

Success and the "Factor of TEN"
In last week's installment I wrote, "A leader must want to succeed ten times more than those they lead."
Take a moment to really feel the meaning and depth of those words. Wanting success to the Factor of TEN is the energy that transforms a leader doing a job into a No-Compromise Leader. It transcends ordinary to extraordinary. It's that level of leadership that captivates followers and lifts them all to that elusive next level. It's when action and results replace words and promises. It's all in the Factor of TEN.

As leaders, we all want to succeed, but by a factor of what? Would you feel inspired and empowered following a leader with a factor of two? How clear and precise would the vision be? Would there a shared determination to achieve breakthroughs, or would average be good enough? During a coaching call with a client, I asked, "What is your biggest concern?" He responded, "Motivating my team." I then explained my Factor of TEN concept. The conversation quickly shifted from productivity and sales to creating extraordinary customer service experiences - about lighting up each and every customer's day.

Here are some no-compromise thoughts about leading and the Factor of TEN:
  • It's about the journey: It most certainly is not about the money and profit. If it's always about chasing the money, you will sap the energy and passion needed to overcome the inevitable obstacles that you will encounter on the journey. The money is the reward for creating something extraordinary - something great. Leading a team to hit goal for the sake of profit doesn't make my motivation meter move very much. Leading a team to hit goal by delivering experiences, products and services that make a difference in peoples' lives inspires me in ways money cannot. Money is the reward for going on a worthy journey.
  • It's about how you show up: Yes, leading at a Factor of TEN is all about you and how you choose to show up as a leader. Leaders with entitlement mentalities view employees as a means to an end. It's always about what's in it for the leader at the expense of the employees. Leaders on the relentless pursuit of finding problems and people doing something wrong are spreading negativity and consequences. Mistakes happen. Things go boom. Leading at a Factor of TEN means learning and growing from things that go off plan.
  • It's about getting it done: Great companies do what others will not. They set the bar higher than their competition. They move and innovate faster than their competition. The economy is never an excuse. Lack of resources is never an excuse because leading at a Factor of TEN always finds a way. Getting it done pulls everyone into finding solutions and winning the game. Lead at a Factor of TEN and it's "get it done" culture will turn the impossible into possible.
  • It's about overcoming your blockages: Leadership blockages are those thinking and behaviors that compromise your ability to lead at a Factor of TEN. It's that fear of confrontation that allows small problems to become major ones. It's that avoiding tough decisions that will be unpopular but must be made for the sake of the company. It's that good old procrastination that keeps you busy with low-level tasks rather than digging into what really needs to be done. Leading at a Factor of TEN is all about your personal commitment to achieving your full potential in order for your company - and its employees - to achieve theirs.
No-Compromise Leaders strive to lead at a Factor of TEN. That's why they stand out and build great companies. They are rewarded for how they lead not why they lead.
